Can anyone tan?
No, if you can't tan outdoors you most likely won't be able to get a tan from indoor tanning.
How does tanning work?
Tanning takes place in the outermost layer, the epidermis, with cells called melanocytes. When exposed to UV it produces the pigment melanin, which is what darkens the skin.
Why use lotion?
Tanning depletes your body's moisture. Lotion helps to stimulate the production of melanin so your skin tans more quickly, gets you darker, and helps to keep your tan longer.
Why does my tan fade?
Tans fade because cells in the epidermis are constantly pushing older cells toward the surface of the skin, where they are sloughed off in about a month. When skin is replaced, your melanin is gone, so you must tan the new cells.
Protect your lips and eyes from UV
Lips don't produce melanin and eyelids are too thin. That is why you should use lip balm with sunscreen and always wear protective goggles.
Tips:
A clean face tans best. You may also want to remove your contact lenses. Baby oil and other outdoor products are prohibited.
